About Us
We at My Reading Town are a family who whilst searching for resources for our own children recognised that there was a need for a comprehensive learning to read app that was both enjoyable and effective.
We also felt that any learning to read app needed to be interactive, helping assess the learner’s progress at all stages. We therefore introduced voice recognition as a means of evaluating if the learner was grasping each letter sound correctly.
We are a family based business and all aspects of the App were developed in house.
We have thoroughly enjoyed putting the App together and look forward to helping our users learn to read English in a fun and engaging manner.
Our App
Our App is designed for teaching children to read using a phonetic learning system that aligns with the UK Department of Education’s curriculum. Our goal is to provide not only an enjoyable experience but also a truly systematic way of learning to read.
The app is aimed at, but not limited to, children aged 3–7 and focuses on teaching the 44 phonemes of the English language instead of the Latin alphabet. Phonemes are the base sounds that form English, rather than letter names.
Using voice recognition, we assess each child’s progress and continuously reinforce weaker areas. Lessons are built around simple word and letter-based games, with each session ending in positive reinforcement of what was just learned.
To keep children engaged, after mastering each phoneme or letter sound they can expand a virtual town by adding buildings of their choice. Each building can be interacted with to trigger an animation that corresponds to that sound. A colourful cast of characters featuring a friendly family appears throughout the app to guide and encourage learners, helping to instil a love of reading.
Unlike much children’s content, which is often designed with a goal of overstimulation, we have chosen a calming aesthetic. Our design is simple yet vibrant, using bold colours and large outlines to hold a child’s attention without distracting from the lesson.
